Fine Art Photography by Frederick M. Stevens
California State Collection
This collection features images of places in the State of California. My family rode the "Super Chief" train from Pennsylvania to California in 1955. My father was in the United States Army and had been stationed at Fort Ord, California. We settled in the town of Salinas and were there for ten years. We were transferred to Fort Benning Georgia in 1965, then Dad retired from the Army and we moved back to Salinas in 1967. So, I spent most of my formative years in California. Salinas is near the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay. My earliest "serious" photography projects were done along US Highway 1 (The Pacific Coast Highway) and in the Central California "Chaparral Country". Dad is a very talented photographer himself and was my first photographic mentor and teacher. I "downloaded a lot of knowledge from Dad and I burned a lot of film in California during my later teen years. But, very few of my photographs from that time period survived a robbery of my stored property when I was at basic training for the Air Force in 1971. So, while I'll display some of my favorite surviving early works, most of what will be shown here now and in the future will be from visits to California from 1972 on. ~φ~ Fred Stevens
